Residency Requirements

Residency Requirements

As a public school district, we are legally required to ensure that all students enrolled are bona fide residents of the Township of Green Brook. Tuition-free attendance is reserved for students who legally reside within district boundaries.

The district takes a proactive and aggressive approach in this regard. Each year, the district reviews and verifies residency information. This process includes record checks and further investigation, when appropriate. Families found to be in violation of residency requirements may be subject
to removal from enrollment, tuition assessment, and/or legal action.

To avoid any disruption to your child’s education, please make sure that your residency documentation is current and accurate. If you have experienced a change in residency, it is your responsibility to notify the district immediately and provide updated records.

We thank you for your cooperation and commitment to supporting the integrity of Green Brook Township Public Schools.

Students who do not reside in the Township may, with Board approval, attend as tuition students. To inquire about tuition-based attendance, or for other residency questions/concerns, please contact Emily Van Cleef, Secretary to the Superintendent and Business Administrator at 732-968-1171 x.1201.

Frequently Asked Residency Questions

Q: I own property in town, therefore my children have the right to attend Green Brook schools tuition free, correct?
A: Not necessarily. While having property, a lease, or a mortgage does help to establish residency, the litmus test is where the child sleeps at night. If the child is domiciled outside the district, that is where they must be enrolled.

Q: I used to live in Green Brook and have a high school student. I moved to one of the other Watchung Regional HS sending districts. Do I need to do anything?
A: Yes, you must report your new district of residence to the high school. Green Brook pays tuition for each student attending WHRHS and failure to report a change of residence is a direct burden to the Township taxpayers.

Q: We are moving in/out of the Township, but would like our child to start/end the school year in Green Brook? Can we be enrolled in the district?
A: Generally, no, not on a free basis. If the Board approves, your child may attend on a tuition basis.

Q: How much is tuition?
A: Tuition varies year to year and depends on the child’s program of study. As of the 2025-26 school year, general education tuition is $18,000/year. Note that tuition-based attendance must be Board approved and the Board has no obligation to accept tuition-based students.

Q: What if I have a unique situation?
A: Please reach out to the district (732-968-1171 x.1201) and we can discuss your options. Our goal is to ensure all students are receiving an education in their primary district of residence and, where unique situations arise, we can connect you with appropriate resources.
