The Newspaper Club meets every Wednesday from 3:15-4:00 in Ms. Gallagher’s room (111). We are always looking for new members. If you are interested in joining, please stop by her room to grab a permission slip.
In the final game of the tournament, Hobart (1-1) defeated host Buffalo State (1-3) by a 6-4 margin. The Statesmen jumped out to a two-goal first period lead and would extend their lead to 4-0 early in the second period. Buffalo State would finally cut the lead to two goals on a pair of Zalewski goals. McElman, who had a four-point night, scored a goal in the opening minutes of the final frame to give the Bengals hope. Hobart would score the eventual game-winner for the Statesmen with under ten minutes to play in regulation. Sean Castagna (San Jose, CA/Bonnyville Pontiacs) would add a late goal for the Bengals to climb within one with 1:23 to play on the clock. Buffalo State opened the season with a split of non-conference games against conference-rival Cortland.
Buffalo State opened its season Saturday at Cortland in a non-conference game, and lost 4-3 in overtime. Janelle Schmitt (Arlington, WA/Northwest Admirals) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 4:09 into the game, but Cortland evened the score late in the opening period. The Red Dragons scored the only goal of the second stanza, but Emma Wadsworth (Arlington, VA/Reston Raiders) knotted the score at 2-2 early in the final frame with assists from Schmitt and Nicole Jewell (Fenton, MI/Honeybaked). Sophomore Amanda Uschold (Rochester/Rochester Edge) scored her first career goal midway through the period to put the Bengals ahead. Schmitt added the lone assist. Cortland lit the lamp just 1:01 later however, and then scored again 2:27 into the overtime period to claim the victory. Mary Keddie (Williamsville/Buffalo Bisons) made 32 saves as the Bengals were outshot 36-27. Buffalo State defeated host Cortland 3-1 Sunday to improve to 1-1 on the young season. Uschold opened the scoring midway through the first period, but Cortland responded to tie the score six minutes later. After a scoreless second period, Tara Ostempowski (Lancaster/Buffalo Bisons) and Jennifer Downey (Freeville/Ithaca Stars) notched a pair of third period goals to give Buffalo State the victory. Crissy Michalek (W. Seneca/Buffalo Saints) made 34 saves in her debut with the Bengals to earn the win between the pipes.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (8-10-1) – Bengals Held Scoreless in Season Finale
Buffalo State was unable to find the back of the net in its season finale, as it was defeated 1-0 by visiting Penn State Behrend Wednesday on Towers Field.
The Lions scored in the 20th minute and held on for the one-goal victory in a physical contest that saw the two teams combine for 28 fouls. Buffalo State had its best scoring chance in the games final minute when a shot from 15 yards out sailed just inches above the cross bar. Penn State Behrend outshot the Bengals 16-10.
Buffalo State finished the season with its highest win total since 1985 with an 8-10-1 overall record.
